Motivation
I once heard that people are more motivated by pain than pleasure and in many instances I believe this to be true. Pain provides us with the natural survival instinct to escape and can often get us moving away from a troublesome situation- whether we are in physical danger or suffering with emotional pain. Pleasure however is something that we move towards rather than away from, so a different kind of motivation is required. It is often easier to put up with some mild discomfort than to step and take the action required to make life really rewarding and worthwhile. After all, taking action requires effort, planning, thinking and energy. When this is lacking, it could be said that a person is experiencing a lack of motivation.
When a person comes to see me in my therapy practice with a problem with their motivation, there is usually a pain or pleasure increase that must take place. There is sometimes a misconception that “therapy” is a bit fluffy. That a person gets to come in and wallow in their problem and talk a lot about it until they have managed to excuse themselves for having the problem in the first place. Or that their therapist will gently change them until they effortlessly end up doing all of the things that they didn’t enjoy before and have always wanted to change about themselves. People who have seen my photo on my website before meeting me often think that I will be that kind of fluffy therapist because I look like a kind lady. They quickly realise that they are wrong about this!
Yes it is always a good idea for a therapist to ham up the pleasure or reward of doing something to motivate a person to do it. But the chances are they know about this pleasure already and it has not provided them with enough leverage to do anything about it. But pain will usually get them moving. If it does not, you may have to question how badly it is that they want to achieve their goal or change, or consider any other emotional attachments that are working as pay-offs in their current stuck state.
Recently a young man came to see me because he wanted to stop smoking. During the consultation I was asking him some questions that are designed to get him into a really positive and motivated state. One of the questions I asked was “What do you hate about smoking?” and he replied “I hate that it makes my teeth yellow.” I said “Your teeth are the most yellow teeth I have seen in a long time and you are very young. They would not have gone that yellow had you not have been smoking all this time. Plus you stink. I know most people who smoke smell of cigarettes smell but you really stink.” The poor man was devastated by what I had said (it was all true, I wasn’t lying about any of it for dramatic effect) he said “I knew you were going to be hard on me and I know I need to hear it but I hadn’t expected you to say that!” I told him “I’d be doing you no favours by playing down this problem. You stink and your teeth are yellow, that’s the truth of it. You’ll be a whole lot more attractive once you’ve stopped smoking yourself to death.” Thus I provided him with some pain, and pleasure, and then more pain again. I was particularly worried about this man as he had tried to stop many times before using more conventional methods but we did the session (just one) and he text me 4 weeks later saying that he had not touched another cigarette since our session and was feeling great.
Thinking about taking part in NLP training? – if so, it can be overwhelming trying to decide which course and trainer will be most suitable for you.Having trained in NLP, I thought it might be helpful for you, if I shared my experience and advice for finding a decent trainer.
The first step is to look into the background of potential trainers – who did they train with? Are they qualified to teach NLP, is their expertise in therapy or business?
Have a look at their website – is it simple, clear and easy to follow? Do you like it? Is the information informative? In my experience you will find out something about the trainers style from their website.Unorganised, chaotic and gimmicky websites could potentially mean a similar training!
Do you know anyone else who has trained with them – try to get information from other people who have first hand experience of their teaching style and course. It's important to find out whether previous students feel competent at the end of training and what they have gone onto do with the training.
Find out about the course content, out of course study and examination method.Good trainings will require you to take part in a set amount of study time and classroom sessions, in order to meet requirements for being able to certify with relevant bodies.
Talk to the trainer and try to meet them beforehand if possible. This is very important. Some companies run free taster events. It's important that you feel that you are able to connect with your trainer and that you find them genuine and interesting to listen too. There are plenty of cheesy personal development gurus out there waiting to take your money!
I completed my NLP practitioner, in Herts, with a company called People Building. People building provide NLP practitioner and master practitioner trainings in Herts.I found this training to be of a really good quality. The trainer, Gemma Bailey, is down to earth, and has a charismatic presenting style. The course content was comprehensive and she knew her stuff.I now coach at trainings for People Building.I would happily recommend NLP practitioner training, Herts with People Building.Good luck in finding a good trainer.
NLP was created by observing and modeling people who were exceptionally talented within the field of therapy. NLP stands for Neuro-linguistic programming. “Neuro” relating to the brain and “linguistic” refers to the language used, and how it is used. “Programming” describes the patterns and habits you create, learn and persistently follow. As we experience the world through our senses, the information is translated into thoughts/ words. The thoughts affect our physiology, emotions and behaviour which can be heightened or dampened depending on how you use language within your own brain.
Therefore, NLP is the use of effective techniques and strategies to create changes in your thinking and communication to achieve different and better results.
More and more people are realising the value of NLP in enabling them to become more effective in their chosen field. In fact, NLP techniques and models are now being used in a diverse range of areas including education, business and human resources, sport, personal development and health.
Business
NLP techniques enhance a variety of business activities. They are often present in courses about selling, presenting and team-building. Other applications of NLP in business include, teaching people to communicate more effectively and persuasively, public speaking and presentations, detecting decision-making strategies in others, making employee training more effective by working on beliefs, practical tools for employees to achieve peak performance and boosting motivation by aligning work with values. Instant rapport.
Education
NLP provides a model of how we communicate with ourselves and others.NLP can used in teaching to improve the ability to impart information in ways that makes learning easier. For example, identifying natural learning styles, use of presuppositions and language patterns and eliciting states in learners that are congruent with learning.
Sport
NLP is used by sport coaches to aid their clients in reaching and maintaining peak performance.Interventions include modeling and learning successful strategies from leaders in sporting fields, setting performance goals and overcoming plateaus and blocks.
Health
NLP offers a cognitive model and practical tools that can help you improve the health of yourself and others. It is becoming widely accepted within mainstream healthcare that there is a link between our thoughts, behaviour and health.NLP practitioners who choose to work within therapy can help individuals lead more satisfying lives in a number of ways. This may include, helping individuals to change limiting beliefs, habits and behaviour, facilitating people to manage states and emotions and helping individuals to find meaning in life by setting achievable well-formed goals.

NLP and Hypnotherapy training in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London is here to proudly present to you certified and approve NLP and Hypnotherapy training courses.
As you are certainly aware, computers come with huge manuals that most of us have never read!We are sure you feel, as we do, thatin the 21st century, training and development must be number one in order to ensure that members of staff are able to stay afloat in the sea of ever changing technologies and stay happy in increasingly pressured working environments. However, scientists say that the human mind is far more complex then any technology it can create, but sadly the mind manual appears to be missing! Richard Bandler (an information scientist) and John Grinder (a linguist) studied excellence within the field of therapy, drawing upon linguistics, anthropology and psychoanalysis to create Neuro Linguistic programming (NLP).
NLP is an understanding of how we code our life experiences and give them meaning.By understanding this, we can use strategies and techniques to create change in our behaviour and results, which help us to maximise our potential.NLP and Hypnotherapy training in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London is recognised as a certified training by more than 3 regulatory bodies.
For business people there are specific tools which enable you to become more effective in your communication and in understanding the individual motivational strategies of your colleagues.Sales and marketing people can learn how to gain instant rapport, understand how customers use buying strategies and customise their language to have greater influence. In fact NLP is a valuable resource for anyone who has to communicate with another person!

NLP and Hypnotherapy are fast growing must-have skills these days. However, in a market where practically anyone can call themselves a practitioner, how do you know that the company or individual training you, is professionally qualified and skilled in the area of expertise. Do you know how to tell the difference between Joe Bloggs off the street who's spent a few hours reading books on the subject in comparison to the major trainers who have really invested their time and knowledge in the stuff?
I work for a company called People Building, who provide NLP and Hypnotherapy training in London, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. I would like to share with you the experience I had when looking for an NLP and Hypnotherapy Trainer.
When I decided that I wanted to do the training course, I began my search for a trainer, as many people do, on the internet. I didn't realise quite how many NLP and Hypnotherapy Trainers there were out there! Even just throughout Herts, Beds, Bucks and London, the Google pages were littered. My main priorities at the time were to find a training course that offered both NLP and Hypnotherapy within the one course, that fitted in with my budget, that were fairly local to me in Hertfordshire. It turned out that a very popular ex stage hypnotist had teamed up with one of the significant figures of NLP and was running a course in London. However, to do both the NLP and Hypnotherapy training course was almost double the money I had available. Later, a friend I had met at a Tony Robbins event, said that they had done the NLP training course with that particular company, and that the group sizes were enormous. This meant that if someone felt confused or unsure at any point, it was difficult for them to put up their hand and ask questions. They also said that the training course had taught “mainly the unconscious mind.” Which meant that they had learnt everything they needed to know, they just didn't know that they knew it. I eventually found a training course, but it was very far from home. It turned out to be quite an adventure and I met many new friends. My only complaint was that I felt I had only been given the tip of the iceberg, I came away wanting more, much, much more. And the more fellow NLPer's I met, the more than me, they seemed to know. I ended up re-doing my NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner trainings (so I paid twice as much as I'd wanted to after all!)
Now I'm qualified as a Trainer myself, and I run an NLP and Hypnotherapy Training school that provides training courses throughout Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London. Obviously, my style isn't for everyone, not everybody will like me, but I thought that what would be useful for everyone, is for my website to be a useful resource for anyone who is planning on doing NLP or Hypnotherapy training courses. That's why I have included on there all of our course contents, what to look for in a trainer, and what to look for in a training course. So to whet your appetite, here are a few tips, but please visit our website for more.
They should be a qualified master practitioner and hold a trainers certification so that they can legitimately certify their students.
The trainers certification should be recognised by an accrediting body such as the ABNLP or BBNLP.
They should be approachable and fit in with who you are as a person.
They should have good rapport with their audience.
A sense of fun.
You should feel convinced that they deliver value.

NLP and Hypnotherapy are big news. More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of mastering the power of their own minds. Lets face it, there are infinite possibilities available to us in our lives and the more we open our minds, the more those possibilities bombard us and the more options we have. Long gone are the days of being hard wired to depression, of only doing and being what others say I must do or be, of going through life with feelings limited existence. You can do or be whatever you want to do or be, simply by mastering these skills.
But now, a new problem bestows us. Who will teach us? There are many so called teachers of these new-age subjects who have produced many so called masters in the subjects. However, having met some of them, I would say that there are students who are failing to learn, simply because the teachers fail to teach.
Finding a good NLP Trainer is by far the most important element here, and tips for finding the best can be found on our website and in previous articles. However, another factor in this process is finding a good training company. Here are some things you may like to consider when deciding which Hypnotherapy and NLP training company to choose.
What is included in the price?
The NLP and Hypnotherapy Training company I work with, who provide trainings throughout Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London offer a free event. This is particularly beneficial, as it gives you an opportunity to meet the team and the trainer. At the free event we offer hundreds of pounds discount off of our trainings. Inclusive of all of our trainings are study manuals and audio CD's. The VAT is also already included in the price. This means that there are no extra costs when it is time to sign up.
Is it value for money?
People Building don't offer cheap trainings, simply because the training we offer is of considerable value. If you pay cheap, you get cheap, it's as simple as that. If you don't believe me, just have a look at our course contents, listed on our website.
Are a variety of learning styles catered for?
Sadly the only way you can answer this question is by being there, on the training. That is, unless, they offer some sort of free taster event, where you can go along and find out, before parting with your hard earned cash.
Testimonials
Check their website. If there are not any testimonials there, will they provide you with some when you contact them? Testimonials from previous students are a great way of knowing what this training company is good at achieving.
Is the course accredited by relevant bodies?
This is important to check because individuals who have completed training may be registered as qualified therapists/ coaches etc, but this doesn't mean that they are qualified to teach. In order to teach these subjects, the accrediting bodies, such as the BBNLP or GHR, must check that the course contents meet the training standards and that the teacher has completed a suitable training course which entitles them to teach the material.
Check that there will be coaches at training events and that they are qualified.Depending on the size of the groups being trained, it is vital that there are a number of qualified coaches who assist the trainer. This is vital because even the best trainer in the world cannot watch everyone practice all in one go.
If you are looking to do NLP or Hypnotherapy training courses in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire or London, then please do contact us and we will do our best to offer you further advise on how to find the best trainings available.
As an ex- student of Inner Compass NLP trainings, I was as surprised as everyone to discover that the company had gone into receivership. So surprised in fact, that I checked it was true on the Companies House website.
It seemed such a sad surprise, only 12 months previously I had spent 17 days with Andy Harrington and Topher Morrison, completing my trainers training qualification which would allow me to teach NLP Practitioner and NLP Master Practitioner courses of my own, both of which I had previously passed with Inner Compass. And yes, it does now seem, as I remember my Master Practitioner training, that perhaps the cracks were already beginning to show. Yet the courses were becoming busier and certainly all of the delegates who had noticed a change in Harrington's attitude put it down to the increasing pressure he must have been under. Little did we know.
The news was broken to the Inner Compass fan base in the strangest possible way. Generally people heard through the grape vine. I found out when I called up the company and asked to speak to one of the key team members, only to be told that they had been “let go.” Knowing that something really wasn't right, I questioned further, only to discover that most of the familiar faces had been “let go” in an effort to save the company, but was told it was very much business as usual. Later, emails were sent around and the gossips got going. I'm certainly not ashamed to admit I was one of them. I can only compare the atmosphere amongst the “fans” to that of driving past the scene of a horrific accident on the motorway. You can't help but look and wonder at what must have happened.
I guess the thing was, that outwardly, Inner Compass appeared so very successful. Having now had the experience of starting up an NLP training school, I can tell you that simply offering a free event isn't enough, that in itself doesn't get sell trainings, it takes much more than that. And Inner Compass seemed to have acquired the winning formula. Having around 100 delegates at each free event became the norm. So how could this great success suddenly crash in such a big way? The truth is, I don't know the real reasons why. Like anyone else who knew about what had happened, I heard the rumours, but having never heard Harrington speak about the incident directly, what I have heard is only hearsay.
Is it right then, that I should capitalise on his misfortune by promoting my own training in an article written about the Inner Compass crash? Probably not when you look at it that way, but I remember Harrington once saying that he hoped we (the delegates) would one day set up training schools good enough to compete with his own. That this would be the greatest gift, to prove how well he had trained us, and it would encourage him to grow, by having some decent competition.
Andy wasn't a friend of mine, and to be honest, there were times when I thought he behaved quite arrogantly, but he was an awesome trainer. The Inner Compass team were the kind of team I aspire to be part of myself. So, my invitation to Andy would be this. Set yourself up a training school good enough to compete with mine, to prove how good a trainer you created, and to give me some decent competition. And don't leave it too long.
Well in truth People Building have yet to decide upon an answer to Inner Compasses weekend event “Fire your Desire” which involved using NLP and Goal setting techniques to help people overcome limits within their own lives. Part of this motivational weekend, included a fire walk, which most participants took part in, along with other mind power utilising techniques that would make any health and safety representative loose sleep for a month.
So what will the People Building answer to this missing event be? Well it is likely to include a firewalk, NLP, Hypnosis, Goal setting, and all of the usual techniques required for a motivational weekend, but the difference will be in the delivery. For a start, the trainer at People Building is female. Already a big difference. But seriously the biggest difference will be the sales pitches. Of course we want you to learn the most excellent skills that are NLP and Hypnotherapy, but we only want the most motivated people to attend our courses as we have found that the most motivated people make the best therapists and practitioners.
As a graduate of the Inner Compass trainings, it never ceased to amaze me at how forthright and persistent the Inner Compass sales team were. In fact, at the end of completing NLP Trainers Training, I was invited to join the Master Trainer Development program. The cost of which could be compared to the price of a brand new car. In fact, I am certain that many cars are cheaper than the Master Trainer program that was being offered. Due to the fact the the monthly instalments would be more than my mortgage, I put off the offer for the time being. I received at least 3 phone calls over the coming months from keen sales people, attempting to get their commission from selling NLP Master Trainer to me. I kept putting it off and instead dreaming of the day when I might actually have that kind of money to spare each month.
Sometime later, I found out that Inner Compass had gone into receivership. I don't know how many of the people that signed up to Master Trainer lost their money, nor how much they have each lost. They may be able to claw some of it back from the creditors. I suppose, they also may not.
Maybe it's my slightly cynical side that prevented me from having that much faith in handing a huge sum of money over to a training company, and maybe it was the pushy sales. Either way, pushy sales are not the People Building style. We're confident you'll do our NLP and Hypnotherapy training, not because we badger you to do so, but because you will believe in the value of doing so.
If you have recently completed your NLP Practitioner training with Inner Compass and did not do the Master Practitioner training, you will be pleased to hear that People Building are offering NLP Master Practitioner Training at the same price as we offer to those who have completed their NLP Practitioner Training course with us.
The reason is, that the founder of People Building had originally trained with Inner Compass and is aware of their course content and standard. She is aware that there is probably only one more Inner Compass NLP Master Practitioner course that will be run before their trainer, Andy Harrington, goes into retirement. Having qualified with Inner Compass at a NLP Practitioner, NLP Master Practitioner and as a Trainer of NLP, she is confident that the People Building trainings are congruent with what is taught by Inner Compass.
Those wishing to complete the NLP Master Practitioner Training with People Building, should first look at the People Building website to familiarise themselves with the company and what to expect. This will help you to make an informed decision about your future investment. By all means, compare our training content and prices with other trainers. You will need to contact us and email/ post a copy of your Inner Compass NLP Practitioner Certificate before we can verify your place on the course and once we have done so, a deposit will be required.
Please read the testimonials on our website for information about our trainings from the people who have really experienced them. We pride our trainings on the authentic NLP that is taught with a real sense of fun and familiarity. As our network widens, we look forward to inviting you to become part of it.
You may also be interested to learn that People Building also offer a diploma in Hypnotherapy, a 15 day course that covers all of the foundations required for setting up a successful hypnotheraputic practice. Certainly, in my own private practice I have discovered that NLP and Hypnotherapy really do work well hand in hand with each other.
Have you ever been on a roller coaster? The thing with roller coasters is the multitude of emotional experiences they provide and how very quickly you can move from one emotion into another. This is perhaps one of the analogies I could use to describe the experiences I had as a result of training in NLP Practitioner, NLP Master Practitioner and NLP Trainers Training with Inner Compass.
My journey began in the Summer of 2005. I had heard of Inner Compass through a friend who had told me “there's this bloke called Andy Harrington whose got a bigger fire walk than Tony Robbins.” Not many people can claim to having anything bigger than Tony Robbins, after all, he's a big guy, so intrigued, I looked him up on the internet and signed up for a free NLP event with his company Inner Compass.
I was impressed with the free event. Harrington used clean stage anchors and a lot of suggestive language when selling his product and I admired the certainty with which he did it. I wasn't there though, to get roped into a “breakthough” weekend. I was there to sign up for NLP training. So at the end of the event I went up to him to ask him about it.
It seemed he'd over estimated his own sales skills. After 10 minutes of trying to convince me that I'd learn more about NLP after I'd signed up for his “breakthrough weekend,” I walked out.
I had a call from one of his sales guys within a couple of days. It took him a further 2 phone calls and around an hour and 15 minutes of discussion about why their NLP was better that the McKenna/ Bandler training to convince me to part with a couple of thousand pounds.
Was it well spent? Well I think that there are trainings that probably matched up to their standard of training for maybe a grand less, but with Inner Compass you wasn't just buying the NLP knowledge, you were buying into the whole showbiz experience, the hugs with smelly strangers, to be part of “their family” and part of the magic.
And mostly it was a magical experience. I learnt a lot and felt comfortable and confident about what I had learned. I made many wonderful friends and even worked through some of my own bad stuff that I'd been holding onto. I had gone there with the intention of getting the qualifications so that I could expand my hypnotherapy business. I ended up deciding that my vocation was being up there on stage, teaching the stuff instead. Trust me, this wasn't a whimsical decision, I used to love being on stage as a child and had for the past 4 years been taking exams in musical theatre. I am passionate about Hypnotherapy and NLP and I rather like money too. So it seemed like the right way forward.
Generally unconventional, I then didn't follow the Master Practitioner, Trainers Training route due to a singing exam that fell at the same time as the next scheduled Master Practitioner training with Inner Compass. This meant that I would do Trainers Training first, followed by Master Practitioner and then The 8 hour exam to pass Trainers Training. And that's exactly the way it happened. I surprised myself on Trainers Training by keeping up with the majority of other delegates who were already Master Practitioners, and I think I surprised some of them too.
Master Practitioner was less engaging, perhaps because some of the cracks in Inner Compass as a company, were beginning to show, or perhaps because Trainers Training had been so tough, that Master Practitioner at times verged on too easy. Still travelling into central London for 12 long days solid was exhausting in itself, and the very next day after it finished, was the 8 hour Trainers Training exam. Which I completed in 4 hours.
Overall I'm glad of the experience I had, I'm glad it was with Inner Compass. At the end of every course, there was always a sense of nostalgia as we all said goodbye to each other. Such a shame that now we are saying goodbye to an institution of such great love and magic forever.
